Parents are always praising their kids for being “sooooo smart” when they are able to distinguish a circle from a square by the age of 3. Don’t get me wrong, it is a pretty cool thing to be able to do when you are so small, but I have bad news: almost every kid can do that at that age. You should be excited for your child and encourage them to continue to learn, but you shouldn’t be telling everyone your kid is a genius until she or he can do something a little bit more complicated… like memorize and recite poetry. And not just something like “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss. I’m talking about stuff like “Litany” by Billy Collins…
