Like many girls of my generation, I was raised on Disney movies and I knew every lyric to every song by heart. I am still a big fan of any Disney production and I go to Disneyland as often as possible because I am infatuated by the fantasy of it all. As I grew up, I kept re-watching the movies and slowly realized how alarming their implicit messages are. Now, I don’t remember sitting down in front of the TV when I was 8 and thinking: “Wow, Ariel! You’re right, I should abandon my family for a strange man that I’ve only met once,” but I can assure you that an underlying reason why I have dyed my hair a deep red for almost a decade is because I wanted to imitate Ariel’s flaming locks to some extent. The attitudes and images projected by these princesses definitely make an impact on girls; whether it’s minimally superficial or blatantly obvious. As aware adults, it is our responsibility to tell little girls that in real life, things don’t always go as perfectly as it does in these idealized, glamorous and magical romances. Especially that boys and girls almost always never fall in love that way.
This video is a list of impressions that a certain cartoon princess makes. I got a good laugh out it!
